Dr. Poo Kuan Hoong

With 15 years of academic and research experience, Dr Poo is a passionate practitioner in the area of Data Science, Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence. A graduate of Nagoya Institute of Technology (Japan), Dr. Poo holds a Doctorate degree (Ph.D.) in Computer Science, a Master of Information Technology (UKM), and a Bachelor of Science (UKM).  He is currently working as Lead Data Scientist where he applies his combination of research and industrial experience in Big Data Analytics, Data Mining, Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence to provide innovative solutions. Besides that, Dr Poo founded two communities in Malaysia: Malaysia R User Group and TensorFlow & Deep Learning Malaysia User Group.

Ts. Dr. Yu Yong Poh

MyRUG

Dr. Yu Yong Poh is one of the committee members of Malaysia R User Group. He received B.Eng. and PhD degrees from University of Malaya in 2008 and 2016. His main research areas are signal and image processing, data science and machine learning. He has published a number of peer-reviewed articles including ISI-ranked journal papers and international conference papers. On the other hand, he is also involved in a number of industry projects. Currently, his industry projects include digital marketing, sentimental analytics, signal processing and Internet-of-Things (IoT) applications.

Ooi Wen Fong

Data Science Team Lead in healthcare and cancer genomics

Genomics data scientist specializing in elucidating complex molecular relationships using large-scale genomics data and clinical information. A total of Nine (9) years in architecting big data solutions to identify biomarkers and novel therapeutic options in cancers with statistical learning using R and Python. A passionate and result-oriented individual with experience in integrating data silos to yield impactful scientific insights, developing scalable, efficient (10x faster than on-prem solutions) and cost-saving cloud-native (Amazon Web Services) applications using serverless and microservices architectures.

Dr. Gan Chew Peng

Sunway University

Gan Chew Peng received PhD degree from Sunway University. Her research interest is data science and credit risk modelling. She is currently pursuing an additional certificate from the SAS Institute to become a SAS Certified Data Scientist.

Dr. Wan Muhammad Hasni bin Wan Sulaiman

Dr. Wan Muhamad Hasni Bin Wan Sulaiman was appointed as the Chief Technologist to head the Digital and Technology business segment of Techna-X Group on 14 October 2020.

During his tenure, Sai has developed business intelligence tools using R and Shiny, for marketing agencies to monitor and measure campaign performance using state-of-the-art ML algorithms. 

Dr. Nurul Ain Toha

Heriot-Watt University Malaysia 

Nurul Ain Toha recently joined Heriot-Watt University Malaysia as an Assistant Professor for the School of Mathematics and Computer Science. She completed her PhD on distribution estimation from the machine learning perspective. During her PhD, she contributed to two R packages, mlr3proba (focussing on density estimation) and (distr6 focussing on kernel methods).

Dr. Hannuun Eadiela binti Yaacob

Universiti Malaya

Dr. Hannuun Yaacob is a senior lecturer at the Department of Economics and Applied Statistics, Universiti Malaya. She holds a PhD in Statistical Genetics from The University of Sheffield, UK. Her main research interests are in Bayesian statistics and biostatistics. She first encountered R while pursuing her postgraduate degree and continues to primarily use R for both her research and teaching.



Dr. Pieter E Stek

Asia School of Business

Pieter is a Postdoctoral Scholar at the Asia School of Business in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. He uses R for social science research, including quantitative analysis, text analysis, network analysis, data mining, survey processing and work flow automation. He sees R as a means to an end, and believes that social scientists who are empowered with a little R knowledge can greatly improve their research and impact.



Prof. Dr. Kamarul Imran Musa

Universiti Sains Malaysia 

Kamarul Imran Musa is an associate professor in Epidemiology and Statistics at the School of Medical Sciences, Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), Malaysia. He obtained the medical degree in 1997, the Master of Community Medicine (Epidemiology and Statistics) degree, both from Universiti Sains Malaysia and the PhD (Epidemiology and Statistics) degree from Lancaster University, UK. He is the gazetted public health physician from the Ministry of Health, Malaysia and the Fellow of the American College of Epidemiology (FACE). He has co-authored Exploring Data Using R published by Penerbit USM and the lead for Advanced Numerical Data Analysis and Advanced Categorical Data Analysis courses for DrPH programme in USM and one of the members of R Epidemic Consortium (RECON).    



Dr. Wan Nor Ariffin

Universiti Sains Malaysia 

Wan Nor Arifin is a lecturer at Biostatistics and Research Methodology Unit, School of Medical Sciences, Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM). He teaches medical statistics and some other interesting subjects. His research is mainly in the validation of measurement tools and machine learning, especially for use in clinical and public health settings. Of note, he uses R everyday, even as a desk calculator.



Tengku Muhammad Hanis Bin Tengku Mokhtar

Universiti Sains Malaysia 

Tengku Muhammad Hanis is a PhD student and graduate research assistant at the Department of Community Medicine, USM. Hanis completed his master’s in medical statistics in 2019. He is currently working on applying statistical modelling and machine learning to cancer data for his PhD. 



Ahmed Arup Kamal

Arup is an analytics veteran and R aficionado. For the last 16 years he is working in top Fortune500 companies in various industries including biotech, oil & gas and consumer goods. He is currently working as a Information Architect of a Swiss Biotech company. Arup specializes in data & information architecture, enterprise analytics and reporting.

Mohd Azmi Bin Suliman

Universiti Sains Malaysia

Azmi is currently in the final year of his Doctor of Public Health (DrPH) study in epidemiology. He previously worked in the Disease Control Division, Ministry of Health Malaysia. As part of his postgraduate training, Azmi was formally trained in disease prevention, disease modelling, clinical epidemiology, and clinical research. His current research project involves studying stroke caregivers' burden and modelling the trend of burden.

Che Muhammad Nur Hidayat bin Che Naw

Universiti Sains Malaysia

Hidayat is a medical doctor pursuing his interest in public health specialty in Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM). In USM, he involved research related to cardiovascular disease and stroke. His current research interest is predicting mortality among stroke patient using time-to-event analysis using machine learning method.   

Dr. Calyn Tan Jen Ai

National Institutes of Health Malaysia

Dr Calyn is a Public Health Physician with 12 years of experience with the public healthcare system and a passionate health-advocate, who likes to think out-of-the-box. Her current job role involves utilizing Big Data Analytics to enable data-driven decision making in healthcare, and translating data into meaningful insights on the health system performance dashboard. Outside of her profession, she enjoys photography, videography, creative writing and learning from people from all walks of life.
